Terms and conditions

These terms apply when you buy from us, book training or a talk with us, or accept a quote from us, whether on this website, by email or on a school purchase order. Please read them before you order, and ask us if anything is unclear.

What these terms cover

  • Coding kits and accessories that you buy online by card, or order on a purchase order.
  • Training, talks and site visits that you book with us.
  • Software licences, acoustic and sensory work, AV and media work, and technology audits that we quote for.

Some things also have their own terms. Software licences come with the software owner's licence, and a written quote can add conditions for that job. Where those differ from these terms, the licence or the quote applies to that part.

Prices and VAT

All prices are in South African rands. We show them excluding VAT and including VAT at 15%, and you see the total including VAT before you pay. Your tax invoice shows the VAT.

Delivery is not included in item prices. If you want your order delivered, we quote the courier cost and you see it before you pay.

We take care to get prices right. If a price is clearly wrong, we tell you before we accept your order, and you can order at the correct price or cancel.

Orders and acceptance

When you pay by card or send us a purchase order, you are offering to buy. We accept your order when we confirm it by email. If we cannot supply something, for example because it is out of stock, we tell you straight away and refund anything you paid for it within 30 days.

For purchase orders, we reply with a quote for whoever approves your purchase orders. Once you confirm it, or send your purchase order, we invoice and deliver.

We email you an order confirmation and a tax invoice. Please keep them: they are your record of the transaction, and we can send copies if you need them.

Payment

  • By card: card payments are processed by Paystack in its secure payment window. We never see or store your card details. Paystack's own terms apply to the payment itself.
  • On a purchase order: we invoice once the order is confirmed, and payment is due within 30 days of the invoice date.

Collection and delivery

You can collect your order from our office in Fourways. We let you know when it is packed and ready.

We can also courier your order to your school. We confirm the courier cost before anything is charged, and we send the order once your payment or purchase order is confirmed.

Any delivery or collection time we give you is an estimate, not a guarantee, and we tell you if something will take longer. Unless we agree a different date with you, we deliver within 30 days of receiving your order. If we don't, you may cancel the order by giving us 7 days' notice in writing.

The goods become your responsibility once you or your courier collect them, or once they are delivered to the address you gave us.

Nothing is posted for digital items such as the Purple Mash home licence; we set them up with you by email.

Changing your mind: 7 days to cancel

If you buy goods on this website, you may cancel within 7 days of receiving them, without giving a reason. This right comes from section 44 of ECTA, which protects individuals who buy online. We offer the same 7 days to schools and businesses that buy on this website.

To cancel:

  1. Tell us by email or phone within 7 days of receiving the goods.
  2. Return the goods unused, complete and in their original packaging.
  3. We refund what you paid within 30 days of the day you cancelled.

The only cost to you is the direct cost of returning the goods, as the law allows.

Purple Mash home licence: you may cancel within 7 days of paying and we refund you in full, unless we have already set the licence up with you at your request.

This right does not apply to goods made or personalised to your order, to software you have unsealed, or to services that started with your agreement before the 7 days ended.

Faulty goods

Under the Consumer Protection Act, if goods are faulty, unsafe or not fit for their usual purpose, you may return them within 6 months of delivery, at our risk and cost. You choose whether we repair them, replace them or refund you.

If, within 3 months of a repair, the fault comes back or a new one appears, we replace the goods or refund you.

This does not cover damage caused by misuse, accidents or not following the instructions, or normal wear and tear.

Many products also come with the manufacturer's own warranty. We pass it on to you in full, and we can help you claim under it.

Bookings for training, talks and site visits

  • Dates: you tell us the dates that suit you and we confirm one with you in writing. A booking is only confirmed once we have confirmed the date.
  • Invoice: we invoice you once the date is confirmed.
  • Moving a date: tell us at least 5 working days before the session and we find a new date with you at no charge. With less notice, or if a session is cancelled, we may charge up to half the session price to cover time already set aside and travel already booked.
  • If we have to move a date: we tell you as soon as we can and offer a new date, or refund anything you paid for that session.
  • Site visits: we confirm any cost for a visit before we come out.

Quotes and estimates

Our quotes are valid for 30 days unless the quote says otherwise. A quote becomes an order when you accept it in writing or send us a purchase order for it.

An estimate from the Purple Mash planner, the quote basket or Ask Maze is not a quote. Estimates are worked out from the price list we hold at the time, exclude VAT unless they say otherwise, and can differ from the final price, for example when a supplier such as 2Simple changes its prices or when a site visit shows that a room needs something different. The written quote we send you is the price we invoice.

Software licences

Software such as Purple Mash, the Purple Mash Library and Python in Pieces is supplied under the software owner's licence terms, which you accept when you start using it. Those terms, and the software owner's privacy notice, cover how the software may be used and how information in it is handled. Licences run for the period shown on your quote.

Acoustic, sensory and AV work

This work is always quoted in writing, and acoustic work only after a site visit, so the quote fits the real room. The written quote sets out what we supply and install, the price and the timing.

Payment for this work is set out on the quote. A deposit of 50% is payable before we order materials, and the balance within 7 days of the installation being signed off.

Free tools: the AI policy wizard and the clap test

The AI policy wizard and the clap test on this website are free, and they are for information.

  • The AI policy wizard gives your school a draft starting point. It is not legal advice or any other professional advice, and using it does not create a lawyer and client relationship or a consulting relationship with us.
  • Your school decides what to adopt. It stays responsible for its own policy and for getting its own legal advice before it uses it.
  • Sources and dates: we check our sources on the dates the wizard shows, but laws, guidance and providers' rules change. We cannot promise that the draft is complete, up to date or right for a particular school.
  • The clap test gives an estimate of how echoey a room is. It is not a professional acoustic measurement.

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for loss caused by relying on either tool without that review. Nothing here limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act, or any liability the law does not allow us to exclude, such as for gross negligence.

Our responsibility to you

We are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to take reasonable care. As far as the law allows, we are not responsible for loss that nobody could have foreseen, for indirect loss such as lost profits or lost data, or for delays caused by events outside our control, such as courier delays, load-shedding or strikes.

As far as the law allows, our total responsibility for an order is limited to the price you paid for it.

Nothing in these terms takes away your rights under the Consumer Protection Act or ECTA, or limits our responsibility for gross negligence or fraud.

Your personal information

We handle your personal information as our privacy notice explains.

Complaints

If something has gone wrong, please tell us first so we can put it right: email hello@maze.education or call 084 502 4777. We aim to reply within one working day.

If we can't resolve it together, you can take your complaint to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (cgso.org.za) or the National Consumer Commission (thencc.org.za).

The law that applies

These terms are governed by the law of South Africa, and South African courts can hear any dispute about them.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. The version on this page when you place an order applies to that order. You can save or print this page for your records.
